What Is Irrigation Engineering?-Applications Of Irrigation Engineering

  A) Irrigation Engineering.
  • Definition :-( Irrigation engineering is the branch or basic area of civil engineering which deals with the development of water sources and proper arrangement of distribution of water from the source developed.)

  • Irrigation engineering is used for the purpose  of cultivation of crop and for drinking and industrial use.
  • The water source is developed by constructing a dam on a river or a stream to retain the water on one of its side.
  • Ground water storage can also be developed by constructing the percolation tank.
B)  Applications O Irrigation Engineering.

:- Irrigation engineering or we call it as water resources engineering helps to achieve the following objectives :
  1. Development of water resource at the right place.
  2. It determines the capacity of reservoir.
  3. It ensures water supply during periods of less rainfall or during summer when water is not available in abundance.
  4. Crop rotation can be done effectively.
  5. It helps to study the flood control devices.
  6. It helps to study the design of different structures such as spillways , weirs and canals.
  7. Construction and maintenance of dams, canals and regulatory works for supply of water when ever it is needed either to fields or to the public.
  8. From the knowledge of Irrigation engineering, design and construction of different types of dams can be done.
